Blogger Profile: Kari Anne Roy of “Haiku of the Day”

Recently, our BlogBurst editors interviewed BlogBurst member, Austin blogger, mother and haiku evangelist Kari Anne Roy. You can find her blog here: Haiku of the Day

Q - How did you decide to create Haiku of the Day after working in advertising and marketing? How do you think your writing sets you apart from some other popular ‘mommy blogs’?

A - When I started the blog I had just made the transition from bringing my son to work with me full-time to staying at home and freelancing. I naively thought that once I quit my job I’d have time to do the elusive Other Things you think people who don’t work outside the home do all day. Little did I know that these Other Things included mostly babbling to myself and cleaning spat out carrots from my son’s hair. Haiku of the Day was my panicked SOS to try and elicit some adult contact.

Meet BlogBurst editor: Eric Roach

Eric Roach is part of the editorial team at BlogBurst. He has written and spoken extensively about beer and music, and has bands, breweries, and broken domains scattered across the state of Texas. He loves xml, long walks, and your blog.

What has the editorial process been like since starting a month ago?

I have been having a blast. I’m actually the lead recruiter (and the new guy) so I research blogs on some harder-to-find topic areas based on what the publishers are requesting. Every day it’s like traveling the world. Just yesterday, I was stuck in traffic in Atlanta, traipsing through the high-fashion district of Sydney, checking out the latest gizmos in Tokyo, and deep in the Baltimore music scene. I am amazed by how good the blogs are and have always admired the sheer honesty of bloggers.

Meet BlogBurst editor: Eileen Smith

Eileen Smith helps manage the editorial/blog selection process with BlogBurst. You can read her fantastic take on Texas and national politics at In the Pink Texas blog. Here are Eileen’s thoughts on BlogBurst, blogging and breakfast cereal:

What has the editorial process been like since starting a month ago?

When we first started recruiting people for BlogBurst, we had definite blog topics in mind based on our publisher’s needs. As more blog requests for invites have poured in, we’ve been pretty overwhelmed - in a good way - with high-quality blogs that stand out from the crowd. As the network opens up, we’ll be developing closer relationships with individual bloggers to help them get noticed and published. It’s been a real learning experience for the editors and the bloggers.

Bylines are better than ever!

New capability for BlogBurst Bloggers. You might remember filling out a Byline for your blog when you first added it to the network. Bylines are your way to entice readers on BlogBurst publishers’ sites to come back to your blog. Unfortunately, Bylines had a 50 character limit which we felt was just too short to do your blogs justice. As a result, we’ve updated the Byline field on your blog profile. The field is now labeled Short Description and can hold up to 200 characters.

Please make sure to re-visit your blog’s profile on BlogBurst today by logging into BlogBurst, clicking on your blog and then hitting the EDIT button in the red divider bar to edit your blog’s profile. Craft a new, catchy byline by entering text into the Short Description field. Don’t forget to add an avatar image for your blog profile while you are there. The graphic below depicts how blogger attribution will look on publisher sites.

Spotlight on Women Bloggers: Interview with Jory Des Jardins of BlogHer

Recently, the BlogBurst team spoke with renowned blogger and BlogHer co-founder Jory Des Jardins about her thoughts on the blogging revolution and the social impact and significance of blogs and female bloggers, specifically:

What was your mission in launching BlogHer?

BlogHer was conceived in what I consider to be a petri dish of change for women online. There were a number of instigating factors: those controversial remarks by Harvard President Larry Summers about women’s natural competencies not being in the sciences, a Newsweek article that raised the question of whether the Blogosphere was being dominated by techy white

It was a fascinating three days on the trade show floor, as well as fun and blissfully tiring.

Sunday was our big bash at Club de Ville - our way of saying “thank you” to all you Web 2.0, open content and blogger enthusiasts who have made our jobs worthwhile and fulfilling.
