Tip: Personal avatars make your blog stand out!

A picture says a thousand words, and adding a personal profile image for your blog is a great way to set it apart from other blogs in our BlogBurst syndication network. Your personal avatar is a way to make your blog stand out to publishers and their readers.

What makes a great avatar? Your avatar should be something that’s uniquely you. Don’t already have something already on hand? Here are some ideas to get you started:

  • Using a portion of your blog’s top banner will help readers connect your avatar to your blog.
  • A great photo of yourself will put a face with your words.
  • Try to use a square image instead of rectangular or oblong images, which may be too small to read.

Here’s an example of how avatars show up on publishers’ Web sites:

So what do you need to do once you’ve got your avatar?

- Save your image in gif, png, or jpeg format
- Log into the BlogBurst Workbench
- Go to My Account
- Click on “edit” on the My Profile page
- Upload your image

You’re done! We’ll take care of the resizing for you.

If you don’t want to include a personal avatar, no worries. We still have our BlogBurst Member avatar that will display with your blog.

How did you find me? An interview with myself.

Greetings Blogburstiverse! My name is Eric Roach and I am an editor here at Pluck, and it is my distinct pleasure to be in charge of Blogger recruitment. One of the most common questions that I get asked is,”how did you find my blog?” and so I thought I would tackle the subject as a post on this here BurstBlog.

What is Blogger Recruitment?

Basically I read the Internet every day looking for blogs that fill specific and general needs within our catalog, as well as fitting the specific requests of our publishing partners, and then invite bloggers to join based on how well they fit any of these criteria.

Read The Internet? That sounds daunting…

It certainly seems that way sometimes. I haven’t quite figured out how to print out the Internet just yet (ah – to attack the internet with a hi-liter and some post it notes), but I have discovered a variety of tools and searches that help me focus my search. Blogger Profile: Darren Cronian of Travel Rants

We invite you to check out our interview with the very talented and informative travel blogger Darren Cronian, whose blog Travel Rants has been syndicated on Telus, MySanAntonio.com and Austin American-Statesman.

Q: What motivated you to start your blog?

A: Well, I started Travel Rants after a visit to a travel agent - I was frustrated and annoyed about the whole experience, and I needed to let off some steam. I couldn’t find any blogs to do that, so I created the Travel Rants blog. I am very passionate about travelling, and love writing about travel, so it seemed right to write about my travel experiences and plans.

Remembering 9-11

BlogBurst has promoted to our publishers and is showcasing posts on 9-11 this week in memory of the attacks on September, 11, 2001. We hope that by highlighting the following blogs and blog posts on 9-11, we can honor and remember those who have been deeply affected.

Austin Blogger Happy Hour

This past week, the Austinist and Pluck joined forces to gather local bloggers together for beer, merriment and a slap-happy good time. As Pluck learned from our SXSW party last year, bloggers and Internet junkies can party likes it’s 1999.

Although our gathering this time was lots smaller, we had a nice turn out and truly enjoyed meeting some of Austin’s bloggers. We are planning to mimic this type of happy hour in other cities, so if you would like us to plan one in your locale, please contact blogburst-editors@pluck.com. Here are some of the pics from the evening.

Stay on Topic: Focus is the key

Hello friends!

One of my duties here at the Tech Specialist desk is to check out each and every blog that people submit to Blogburst. Having looked at so many, I’d like to offer some explanation as to which blogs we favor and why, so that you’ll have a better understanding of what we look for in a blog.

Probably the single biggest non-technical factor for success is topic focus. If you blog about a single issue (and really, it could be just about anything) you’ll have a much better chance of being accepted into Blogburst and placed on a publisher’s site.

More happy day wishes - Happy Labor Day!

Two days in a row of wishing you happiness here at BlogBurst. Today marks the beginning of a well-deserved three day weekend, which probably means you find yourself at your keyboards distracted by thoughts of cold beer at 2 pm, walks on the beach, wearing your pajamas all day… out to eat, even.

Here’s wishing you a long, adventure or non-adventure filled weekend (depending on what you are aiming for). Be safe, be blogging and be labor-free.
