Generous bloggers - Leaderboard rewards recipients donate their funds to a good cause

As many of you know by now, BlogBurst will be rewarding the top 100 bloggers who are picked up in the network each quarter with reward dollars that are based on a sliding scale model of payment. We call it the BlogBurst 100 Leaderboard.

What some of you may not realize is that we’ve designed the leaderboard to also act as a means of charity - for those bloggers who would rather donate their rewards to a good cause. The BlogBurst 100 Leaderboard charity recipient is The Periwinkle Foundation. For Q4 2006, we were able to donate $1,000 to The Periwinkle Foundation because bloggers in our leaderboard exercised their decision to donate their rewards.

A little about The Periwinkle Foundation: Their mission is to provide programs to enrich the lives of children with cancer and children with life threatening illnesses who are treated at Texas Children’s Hospital and their families.

We intend to continue the leaderboard charity option, and encourage our bloggers to continue to be generous with their rewards.

About The Periwinkle Foundation:

Founded in 1983, The Periwinkle Foundation provides camping and recreational programs for children with cancer and other life threatening illnesses.
The Foundation offers four programs throughout the year, free of charge:

Camp Periwinkle is a one week summer camp for cancer patients and siblings from Texas Children’s Hospital. The children have a full camp experience that includes swimming, horseback riding, archery, arts and crafts, dances, campfires, ropes courses, you name it. In 2006 Camp Periwinkle topped an all-time high of 184 campers ages 7 to 15 years old.

Camp YOLO is a weekend camp providing support for teenagers with cancer, cardiac diseases, renal diseases, and HIV. The camp, named by a camper for You Only Live Once, takes place two weekends of the year and allows camps ages 13 to 18 years old to share their experiences living with life threatening illnesses.

Making a Mark provides children undergoing treatment at Texas Children’s Cancer Center with artistic and creative writing opportunities. Children get to work with professional artists and writers to express themselves through the arts. More than 250 children participate each month, and their works travel across the country for display, including the Texas State Capital, Houston Children’s Museum, and Norfolk Virginia Children’s Hospital.

Celebration of Life is an annual gathering for long-term cancer survivors and current patients to share stories of hope. More than 200 adults and children attend this event.

Long-term camp counselor describes camp in his blog post.
